I think virtual worlds hold a lot of promise for education, not just obvious applications like distance learning, but as a supplement to fact-to-face classes as well. I'm heavily involved with the educational community in Second Life and can point you to a few resources that might be helpful in your explorations:
University of Cincinnati Second Life Learning Community Wiki - http://homepages.uc.edu/secondlife
SL Best Practices in Education 2007 International Conference - http://slbestpractices2007.wikispaces.com
SimTeach Wiki - http://simteach.com
My contact information is included on the UCSLLC wiki (the first link), feel free to send an email or if you'd like to schedule a time to have a phone conference, just let me know!
You are very welcome! I will try to add more resources here. I have thought of so many I did not share! I'll see if I can add more info on games and simulations.
